The arts are one of the best ways to foster joy and community. There are also numerous studies citing the value of engaging socially with the arts throughout our lives. Whether you’re excited about an opportunity to go to “camp” again (or for the first time), you’re excited about exploring your creative side, or you just want to meet some new people with similar interests and have fun, this is the place for you!
Research shows that dance is good for cognitive health as well as improving cardiovascular health, balance, bone density, and mental health. Plus, dance is a great way to have fun! We will begin each day in our Felker Black Box Theatre with some light music and movement activities. Our movement classes are based on the principle that “Dance is For EveryBody!” Using gentle, easy-to-follow guidance, we will tap in to the joy of movement in ways that feel good for your body. Influenced by modern dance, fitness, martial arts, somatic awareness and yoga, each class will take you on a journey to move in "your body's way." We will connect with soulful, upbeat music that is intended to take you on a journey to lift your spirits, ground your body and center your mind.
No experience necessary, just a willingness to have fun and try something new. We will bring a playful and creative approach to flexibility, agility, strength, balance, and mindfulness.
Classes are designed for people 55+ and are highly adaptable for all abilities, from older athletes to people with chronic illness or mobility limitations. Both seated and standing options will be offered for the specific challenges of those who show up to each class.
Please wear comfortable clothing that you can move easily in, like you would wear for a fitness class. The movements are designed to be gentle enough to be done barefoot, but sneakers are optional for those who want the support. Please bring water to drink.
We will take a short break before heading upstairs to create some visual art. Again… no experience necessary, just a willingness to try something new! Expect to experiment with many different art mediums such as water color, printmaking, collage, fibers and more. Each day will have a material focus and some optional prompts for utilizing the material. All materials and tools can be adapted based on physical or sensory needs. This experience is all about enjoying and connecting with art-making again and is suitable for any level of artistic experience. The instructor will provide support and direction based on individuals' needs, allowing experienced makers to still grow and beginners to feel comfortable. No matter participants' past experience with art, this part of camp aims to just get them making again and to help participants focus on the process of creating together!
